Sephora, which hands out samples in stores as part of a loyalty experiences, launched late last year “Play!” a sub-box service that also will cost $10. (“Finally!” proclaimed fashion websites.)

Outpacing Traditional Retail.  A study by Hitwise, a division of Connexity which provides marketers with a sampling of online behavior, showed that visits to so-called  “sub-box” sites has grown 3,000 percent in the past three years , with 21.4 million visits in January 2016. (In comparison, visits to the top 500 online retail sites have only gone up 168 percent.)
